Shalom friends,
Just a few days after we enter the new Jewish year of 5785, we will mark the 1-year anniversary of the horrific events that occurred on October 7, 2023, when Hamas invaded Israel and incited a war that tragically continues until this day. Hostages remain unreleased, and too many Israelis remain displaced, injured, murdered, and spiritually harmed. Amidst Israel’s efforts to uproot the source of this evil from the Gaza Strip, the lives of many Palestinian civilians, too often forced into complicity with a terrorist regime, have been overturned or even lost in this war.
When we dream of Zion, this is not the world for which we long. Our hearts and our prayers know that peace can only thrive without violence, whether it be retaliatory or inciting.
The newly composed prayer below, which I offer in three versions (English, traditional Hebrew, and a creative Hebrew text that addresses God in feminine language), frames both our sorrow for the losses of this moment and our unstoppable hope for a Jewish State in an age of peace. In observing this sad occasion, may this prayer guide you and your communities in finding words of hope.

A Prayer for Peace When Commemorating October 7
English:
Adonai, as we remember the countless atrocities that befell our people on October 7, 2023, we seek Your love and Your comfort. Please guard beneath Your sheltering presence the souls of those whom we have lost. Please lead our aggressors to return all the hostages to their homes, and please strengthen the State of Israel to protect all those displaced and to care for all those injured on that dreadful day.
This past year challenged us to define and to demonstrate our love and hope for the Jewish State. God, may Your strength grant all humanity the boldness to make this new Jewish year of 5785 a year of peace on all fronts in Israel and beyond. Please heal our broken hearts. Please let the discouraged among us find Your love. Please thwart the plans of those who plot to harm us, and please lead us into an age of peace.
Blessed are You, Adonai, Protector of Israel and Nurturer of this World.
